Each year the Daughters of the American Revolution sponsor an American History Essay contest for local students in grades 5-8, with a designated theme. This year’s theme was ‘Forgotten Patriots’, people who bravely served in the Revolutionary War in a number of capacities but didn’t get historical recognition enjoyed by others. Included in the group were many Hispanics, Native Americans, African Americans and women, some who disguised themselves as men and actually fought for our independence.
